A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE

Sam studied geology at GCSE and A-Level and graduated with a BSc with Honours in Geology from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 2000. As an undergraduate he was keen on fieldwork, structural geology and plate tectonics and wanted to do research. He joined the University of Edinburgh as a post-graduate research student in 2001 and graduated with a PhD in 2006. His doctoral thesis was an investigation of the tectonic development of the Tethyan suture zone in the Pontides, northern Turkey. This research involved extensive periods of independent fieldwork in northern and eastern Turkey and used structural geology, analytical geochemistry, stratigraphy, petrography and sedimentology to answer questions regarding the closure of the Tethyan Ocean and the onset of continental collision and mountain-building. This research greatly influenced his understanding of how the behavior of the Earth's lithosphere controls the development economic resources. In this way, Sam's applies an understanding of Phanerozoic processes in the Eastern Mediterranean to the economic geology of other regions such as the Palaeoproterozoic of West Africa and the British Caledonides. Sam researched the hydrocarbon potential and tectonic development of the Eastern Black Sea with CASP (University of Cambridge), between 2005 and 2008 and carried-out structural transects of the Russian Greater Caucasus and the Crimean Mountains. Sam has also worked in landscape heritage, wildlife conservation, environmental education and has traveled extensively in SW and Central Asia. Sam worked on gold exploration projects with RSCMME in Mali, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique from 2010-2013. Sam was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of the West of Scotland in 2015-2017 and researched gold mineralization in Scotland and Ireland. Sam continues to engage with the academic community and to present his work at international conferences, is working on peer-reviewed articles and collaborating internationally on multiple projects.
